"Fine Print #3: It's Illegal to Make a Mileage Run I think the wording in the Flyertalk issue is incorrect, and certainly terribly misleading. I can't imagine an airline saying that miles will be awarded on quick-turnaround round trips only from Jan. What if my colleague's trip was cancelled, I had already budgeted the time and was at the airport, and I wanted to keep the routing for the miles? Or, if I had really picked that routing just for the miles, how could they tell? (This was AA, not one of the airlines in the quote, but the concept should apply to US and DL too.) Except in extreme cases, some of which we've read about in this forum, I think this gets too tricky to enforce.Īlso, I don't see anything in either of the two quotes prohibiting a flight taken solely to earn miles, at year-end or any other time, as long as the flight is on an acceptably direct routing from its origin to its ultimate destination. The AA folks at BOS offered me the non-stop, which I declined for the above reason. The reason was (yes, really) to meet a business colleague so we could fly to France together, but the miles weren't unwelcome. The trick here is determining "intent." I recently flew BOS-CDG via ORD. ![]()
